Floa's Favourite Adventure Photographers Part 1

Floa's Favourite Adventure Photographers Part 1

by Nick Baines October 16, 2018

A rundown of the inspiring adventure photographers FLŌA thinks you might like to follow.

Still images have long provided motivation for travel and adventure. From the pages of National Geographic, to the million follower feeds of Instagram, it’s these photos that draw our attention to new realms and drive us to complete similar challenges. Here we take a look at some of our favourite adventure photographers and give them a shout out for you to share our love of a good soul-stealer.

We'd love to show you more of their photos, so have a click on the small ones we have provided and you'll be sent to their awesome Instagram profiles where we recommend you'll do well to hit the 'follow' button.

Nic Alegre

Before carving a name for himself shooting some of the worlds most talented skiers, Nic Alegre was a desk-bound New York City marketing man.

After leaving the advertising world, the self-taught photographer has relocated to Whistler where he holds the positions of senior photographer for Powder Magazine, and lead photographer for Teton Gravity Research. Many of Alegre’s images have a dramatic, almost moody light to them, but what stands out most is his knack for capturing energy and movement.

Christian Pondella

LA native Christian Pondella is a name synonymous with adventure sports photography and any list of adventure photographers would be a sham without his name included.

It’d be quicker to list where his images haven't appeared, than where they have, but highlights undoubtedly include Red Bull, Cliff Bar, Oakley and Patagonia campaigns as well as Outside and ESPN magazines.

His images of skiing is what he’s best known for, but this guy is a pretty extreme expedition leader in his own right. He also lives in the enviable location of Mammoth Lakes in California’s Eastern Sierra, allowing him easy access to some of the state’s most iconic wilderness areas.

Scott Serfras

If you’ve picked up a snowboard magazine at any point over the past 25 years then there’s a good chance you’ll already be familiar with the name Scott Serfras.

After cutting his teeth shooting future backcountry giants like Devun Walsh, Serfras was recruited to the role of senior photographer for Transworld Snowboarding magazine.

Since then, he’s racked up over 100 cover images and worked with a wide range of brands on campaign shoots. His work remains deeply rooted in the wilds and most often touches on remote, hard to reach locations.

Nicholas Tiechrob

Vancouver based Teichrob spends a lot of his professional time pointing lenses at skiers in the backcountry.

Venturing deep into the mountains for his shoots, you’ll be unsurprised to know his photos are often used by expedition brands. Tiechrob’s photos stand out for his unique framing of landscapes and the way he mages to capture the rugged, grandeur of the mountains.

Fredi Kalbermatten

Swiss snowboarding legend Fredi Kalbermatten is one of the smoothest backcountry go-getters in the business. The snowboarders, snowboarder.

But in between dominating his home zone of Saas-Fee, Kalbermatten has found time to pick up a Leica and shoot his surroundings. Although not a professional photographer, the photos Kalbermatten shares give an insight into a life spent in the mountains, and offer glimpses into his backcountry shenanigans.
