Science Of Flow - Why The Time is Right

Science Of Flow - Why The Time is Right

by Nick Baines October 29, 2018

For anyone that’s ever played any sports or put physical and mental performance together for any amount of time, they’ll have knowledge of a space and time where everything is in a state of ‘flow’, when you’re in the perfect alignment to get the best out of yourself.

This is not - going with the flow - where you’re all but a log floating facedown in the mainstream, it is a state that even gamers in e-sports know of whereby you’re optimal for everything and laser focussed on the task at hand, making performance decisions in nanoseconds with the rest of the cumbersome thoughts of the world or physical machinations offline.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

This state was first recognised, named and examined by the unpronounceable Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, a clinical psychologist who in the 1970’s set about compiling one of the biggest psychological surveys ever.

He talked to everyone, starting with experts like brain surgeons, chess champions and the people at the top of their game. Then he moved on to everyone else from farmers to motorbike gang members and anyone in between - globally.

Everyone Mihaly talked to, no matter who they were or what their socio-demographic was, felt they always did their best when in full ‘flow’. Flow was universal, no matter the age sex or undertaking, there was a singular state everyone felt when they performed at an optimal level.

State Of Flow

Mihaly’s journey to this conclusion and the subsequent naming of the state ‘FLOW’ in a book wasn’t a smooth ride and over time there have been those that took to denouncing the idea.

However over the past decade, neuroscience and science in general has caught up with the Flow theories and where Mihaly’s was proving it exists, the next question was why it exists.

FLŌA - The Brand

FLŌA acknowledges the Flow state and counterproductively from the tradition of brand whereby shouty ‘me, me’ brands are trying to be at the forefront of consumers minds, FLŌA wants to be forgotten.

When in a state of Flow nothing but high performance matters, its as though everything else is forgotten.

FLŌA technical apparel is just part of the equation - we provide you with high performance baselayers that you know you can trust and don’t have to worry about. Just get on with your time up the mountain, deliver your best, trust in your equipment to do its job and help you excel.

High Performance & Flow

FLŌA performs so you can tune out the noise and flow without distractions interrupting you performing your personal best.

FLŌA is a nod to and built on the philosophy of Mihaly and his peak performance state because it is universally applicable, universally shared and no matter what level your playing on, we’re there for you to forget about us and excel.
