Ever since the idea for FLŌA was conceived, we wanted sustainability to play a key role. After all, we created the backcountry baselayer to help you head deeper into the mountains and explore the wilderness, and that landscape needs our protection.
This approach to our product required serious research and development. We needed to ensure we found partners that not only meet our expectations for quality, but operate on a responsible level too.
We source our yarns from a German supplier called Suedwolle who have recently achieved Level 3 (full compliance) in the European Outdoor Group’s (EOG) Sustainability Charter. Suedwolle has also been a Bluesign Systems Partner since 2011.
To explain things a little further, Bluesign is a comprehensive Input Stream Management System that covers all environment, health and safety aspects within the textile manufacturing chain. This makes a big difference, and ensures we have a responsible supply chain right from the beginning.
After some trials and textile research, Suedwolle began supplying us with Merino wool. Our particular wool comes from their Mount Hesse Merino Sheep Station in Victoria, Australia. Not only is the wool sustainable, the whole farm is.
Once we had the materials taken care of, we needed somewhere to manufacture them. We had to find facilities that operated with a sustainable approach, but still met our high expectations for quality.
This led us to work with two factories in Portugal. Both outfits are some of the most respected in European garment manufacturing. One of our Portuguese partners run their operation with 100% renewable energy – with a staggering 80% of that coming from solar.
With the materials and manufacturing now in order, the last step was to make sure that our baselayers were built to last. Our designer, Sean Pankhurst worked tirelessly to produce a garment that not only delivers optimum comfort, but exceptional durability. This meant applying new technologies to areas that see the most abuse and rethinking standard practice.
Our pursuit for sustainable business is an ongoing one. As new technologies and supply chains open up in this realm, we strive to be early adopters of important system changes while never compromising on the comfort or quality of our products.
