As the 24th Winter X Games event comes to a close, we give you a run down of the action that took place in Aspen Colorado.

At the opening of the Winter X Games  it was announced that the event would remain in Aspen for five more years. This event has now spanned into a kind of festival, presenting live music as well as snowboarding, skiing, snow biking and snow mobile events. Here, we take a look at the highlights of this year's X Games held at Buttermilk Mountain, Aspen, Colorado.

A Fifth Year For The SOUS Event

It was the fifth year of the Special Olympics Unified Snowboarding event this year. It's a slalom race composed of teams, each made up of one X Games athlete, and one Special Olympics athlete. Henry Meece and Chris Klug took the top spot, with Scotty Lago and Juan Guentrutipai coming in second. Perhaps most notable though was Christopher Perdue and Mike Schultz who not only came third, but took home their first SOUS medals.

Canadian Women Clean Up

Canadian medal collector Cassie Sharpe took the gold in the Women’s Superpipe with a 94.00 point run that included back-to-back 9’s and a leftside 1080. Following her success from last years X Games, this was the one Gold that had eluded her, and she came to claim it on opening night.

The women’s Big Air saw New Zealander Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Jamie Anderson put down some impressive runs. However, they were both bested by yet another Canadian, Laurie Blouin who stomped a frontside 900, followed by a cab double underflip.

Zoi Sadowski-Synnott continued her reign by taking Gold in the Women’s Slopestyle. With a switch backside 900, and a crowd-pleasing double backflip her run was oozing style and earned her 91.00. This run not only gave Zoi Gold, but made her the first ever snowboard athlete from New Zealand to win Gold at the X Games.

After taking Silver in the Men’s Big Air the previous night, Mark McMorris was top of the podium in the Slopestyle event. The winning run saw him bust out a switch backside 1260, frontside triple cork 1440, then a backside triple cork 1620.

Kelly Clark Announces Retirement

Being the first woman to land a 1080 in the X Games back in 2011, Kelly Clark has been on the podium a staggering 137 times during her career. At this year’s X Games Clark took her final run through the Superpipe before announcing her retirement from professional snowboarding.

Monster Energy Men’s Snowboard Superpipe

The main event that traditionally closes the Winter X Games is the Men’s Snowboard Superpipe. Following last year’s Silver Medal, Scotty James took Gold with a solid run. The 94.00 run included switch backside double cork 1080, backside double cork 1260, cab 1080, and a frontside double cork 1260. The 17 year old Yuto Totsuka took Silver, while X Games legend Danny Davis made his first podium finish since 2015 with Bronze.

Four days, 117,000 spectators, 21 events, six custom built courses. With Aspen confirmed as the host for the next five years, we can expect this iconic resort to become synonymous with the Winter X Games.
